Last weekend I assisted Mel Mielekamp of Meloo Photography to photograph her “wedding that is not a wedding, that is a wedding”. You see, Mel does not typically photograph weddings. Donna & Shaun are not your typical wedding-type couple, either.

We met up with Donna, Shaun and their gorgeous Finn at the family home and it was immediately evident that this was going to be something special. The details were superb and the atmosphere was magical.

Our ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ came out to various locations with Finn prior to the wedding for a portrait-type photography session. It was so relaxed and beautiful. Here are a handful of my favourite images.

Megan & Gary ~*~ Brisbane Wedding Photographer

I photographed Megan and Gary’s wedding the Saturday after the big Brisbane floods. We didn’t know 100% what to expect, but the day was beautiful.

We began at their home, with all the girls getting ready. When I say “all the girls”, I mean it… Megan had six bridesmaids! The ceremony was at St Andrews at South Brisbane - a beautiful, historic church near South Bank.

Most of the places we had hoped to take photographs post-ceremony were closed due to flood- and water-damage. The reception was at the Ship Inn at South Bank, which was also under water during the floods. Power had not been restored and the entire bottom floor was closed. We entered by a little set of stairs to the second floor at the back. The venue was fantastic ensuring Megan and Gary’s day went ahead without a hitch. A generator kept the drinks cold and powered a cascade of fairy lights. Candles and tealights brought a romantic atmosphere to the evening.

Michelle & Anthony ~*~ Brisbane Temple Wedding Photographer

Michelle and Anthony celebrated a private blessing of their marriage at the Brisbane Temple, then joined family and friends for photographs and cake cutting at Kangaroo Point followed by a lovely family dinner.

Kirsten & Marty ~*~ Brisbane Wedding Photographer

On what turned out to be a very wet weekend, I assisted Lisa Clark photograph the wedding of Kirsten and Marty. What a great bunch! They did their best to not let the wet weather get to them and we all had a lot of fun!

After the beautiful wedding, we made our way back to our wet-weather-fall-back, Nudgee College, only to find scaffolding covering the sand-stone arches! We didn’t give up and managed some lovely shots before heading out to Shorncliffe Jetty. Once we were back at the reception, we had all but forgotten the rainy weather outside and everyone enjoyed a big dance to welcome the bride and groom. I’ve never seen anything like it!

Vonn & Dan ~*~ Bayside Wedding Photographer

Vonn and Dan were married just beside the Old Cleveland Lighthouse, Bayside (Cleveland) and celebrated with family and friends at the Lighthouse Restaurant. The day was beautiful and very bright and sunny – a lovely way to begin a life together.

Allyson & Paul ~*~ Sydney Wedding Photographer

This weekend saw me in Sydney, as Matron of Honour for my lovely friend and cousin, Allyson. We have now, together, thrown off our McKenna-shackles and become somebody else’s wife (as Allyson was my bridesmaid in 2000, when I married John).

Congratulations to Allyson and Paul on the beginning of their new life together. I love you both.

As MoH, there isn’t much room to fit a 5kg DSLR camera in your gown, so I didn’t take many photos. Allyson’s cousin on the other side of her family is a professional wedding photographer also, so he took care of capturing the day.

I took a few as we were getting ready, including this of my Aunty Kay putting Allyson’s necklace on…

I loved this outdoor wedding. The guests were set up on a small peninsular along the bay at Scarborough and the weather was magical. I met Donna in a Photoshop class I was teaching and was thrilled to be included in Damien and Donna’s special day.

Laura met Jimmy in America and they fell in love. Being a Brisbane family girl, they decided to marry here and have family and friends fly in from all over the world – mostly America and Norway (Laura’s paternal heritage). We celebrated a lovely ceremony at St Carmel’s Catholic Church, Coorparoo and the reception was held at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens restaurant.
